Nunes To Defend Title Against Pennington At UFC 224 In Rio

amanda nunes UFC 2017On May 12 the UFC returns to Brazil for UFC 224, where women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes will put her belt on the line against Raquel Pennington.

For Nunes, the fight stands as the first in her native country since 2015 and the first time she will get to defend her title on Brazilian soil.

In her first two title defenses against Valentina Shevchenko and Rhonda Rousey, the hard-hitting fighter entered the bout with a bit of a chip on her shoulder. This however won’t be the case against Pennington as the two fighters have instead been rather friendly in the leadup to the fight.

Pennington is a sizable underdog according to the oddsmakers and will certainly have her work cut out for her. She absolutely earned her shot at the title with consecutive wins over Jessica Andrade, Bethe Correia, Elizabeth Phillips and Miesha Tate.

Problem is that her victory over Tate was in November of 2016 and since then she has been inactive due to the fact that she suffered a car accident that forced her to step aside until now.

Despite her long layoff, Pennington believes that the training regime she’s been working on with her fiancée, top UFC strawweight contender Tecia Torres, will have her ready for the challenge at hand.

Nunes is unquestionably the naturally bigger fighter of the two and has the power to knock out not only Pennington but anybody in the division. Pennington has proved to be a scrappy fighter that is unwilling to back down against anyone so she won’t be an easy assignment for Nunes.

Her best chance will be to try to survive the early storm of punches Nunes will submit her to and the counter to try to capitalize late, where the Brazilian has had some challenges in the past.

A Nunes win could clear the way for a future fight with fellow Brazilian and UFC’s women’s featherweight champion Cris Cyborg, but Pennington isn’t likely to hand things over without a struggle.
