Naomi Osaka Upsets Angelique Kerber At US Open

naomi osaka japanJapan’s Naomi Osaka, pulled a stunning upset in the second day of US Open competition as she defeated the tournament’s defending champion Angelique Kerber, of Germany, 6-3 and 6-1.

Kerber, who showed in the previous hard-court tournaments that she was not at her best, was overwhelmed by Osaka’s power and aggressiveness. The 19-year-old never gave last year’s winner an opportunity to find her rhythm and mount a comeback.

The Japanese used her strong right from the backcourt throughout the game with devastating results. The reigning champion simply had no answers and could not find the spark that would turn the game in her favor despite a huge effort in the second set.

Kerber struggled in many aspects of her game. The German had three double faults in the first set and frequently made unforced errors on the net giving away vital points.

Osaka, who made her US Open debut last year and reached the third round, is ranked 45th in the world. The Japanese teenager used her good serve and aggressive game to dominate the German and advance to the second round.

Kerber a year ago was the world’s top player and was raising the US Open trophy the last time she stepped on the court of the Arthur Ashe Stadium but this season she’s had an irregular campaign.

Kerber’s defeat represents the seventh major upset in the women’s side of the US Open.

The first day of competition saw, among other results, Russia’s Maria Sharapova defeat Romanian Simona Halep 6-4, 4-6 and 6-3; Johanna Konta had a chance at the No. 1 ranking, but that possibility evaporated quickly with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 loss to Aleksandra Krunic; and Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard lost 7-6 and 6-1 to 89th -ranked Evgeniya Rodina, from Russia.
