Kawhi Has Potential To Make Toronto Team To Beat In The East

kawhi leonard toronto raptors 2018Although Kahwi Leonard threatened with sitting out next season after being traded to the Toronto Raptors instead of the Los Angeles Lakers it’s unlikely that he will actually do so.

After an injury-plagued 2017-2018 campaign he can’t afford to stay inactive almost two full seasons as he needs to prove his value on the court if he wants to spend just one season in Toronto.

With that in mind, it’s worth looking at how Leonard can help the Raptors as he definitely is a top-five NBA player when healthy.

Pairing Leonard with Kyle Lowry and the rest of the Toronto roster has the potential of being a move capable of taking the Raptors to the NBA Finals and make them the team to beat in the Eastern Conference.

Leonard is arguably the best two-way player in the game and as such he’ll be asked to replace the scoring void that DeMar DeRozan’s left behind when he was shipped to San Antonio as part of the trade that sent Leonard to Toronto.

His offensive skills will turn him into the go-to guy when the Raptors need a bucket as he can score well in isolation situations, is a great shooter and is also a great cutter as well.

Leonard is a player that can score almost from anywhere on the floor while on offense and if teams decide to double-team him he has more than decent playmaking skills and great vision to find the open guy for the easy shot.

In fact, Lowry should get a lot of more open shots playing next to Leonard and he should see an increase in efficiency.

Also, players such as Jonas Valenciunas should get easy buckets in the paint as Leonard is double teamed in pick-and-roll situations as he commands so much attention from opposing defenses.

Adding Leonard to the team should help the Raptors offense as he will free them up for more open shots. On defense, Leonard should help them right away as he is one of the top defenders in the league and by pairing him with Lowry, Danny Green, Valenciunas and OG Anunoby the Raptors will have a very talented unit and the ability to switch on defense.

The Raptors will have a ton of defensive combinations they can put on the floor and this should give them the versatility to rotate their players depending on the opposing matchup.

Leonard is a top defender who can shut down or contain the top wing player on the opposing team, which will be very helpful when going up against players such as Boston’s Gordon Hayward and Jayson Tatum and Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Adding Leonard is a move that will improve the Raptors if he plays, and if it works out it could help them contend for a spot in the NBA Finals as they should benefit from finally not having LeBron James in the Eastern Conference.
