Federer Should Defeat A Declining Gasquet With Ease

roger-federer-atp-2018Roger Federer has continued to stroll through the defense of his Australian Open title and in the third round he will face the Frenchman Richard Gasquet.

Federer, who’s five years older than Gasquet, ranks at No. 2 in the world and is 29 places above him. The Frenchman over the past two years has started to steadily slip lower and lower in the ranking as it seems that his age is starting to catch up to him in more ways than one.

He doesn’t seem to be mentally focused anymore and physically he’s no longer at the top of his game either, thus he is expected to hardly challenge Roger Federer in this match. In other words, Gasquet seems to be fading as he is apparently reaching the back end of his career.

Federer, on the other hand, seems to get better with age as he won two Grand Slams last year and is still playing great this year so far. He has won 17 of 19 matches against Gasquet and this will most likely be victory number 18 for Federer in their head-to-head series.

The Frenchman’s backhand, that’s been so great over the years, just looks more susceptible to be broken down recently and Federer will surely try to take advantage of that.

The quality gap between these two players is so big that even if by chance Gasquets plays this match at the top of his game he would be unlikely to defeat Federer. He would have to get injured or play well below his standard to lose against Gasquet.

Gasquet is just the type of player that Federer loves to play. Federer moves around the court better than Gasquet despite the age difference, he owns a beautiful serve that can deliver a lot of power, he has a better forehand than the Frenchman and a backhand that has more power and whip.

In the last nine matches these two have played against each other Federer has won 19 consecutive sets so don’t expect Gasquet to get anything else than a loss in straight sets this time around.

Federer is playing so well right now that is highly unlikely to see him facing stiff competition before the quarterfinals as he has once again placed himself amongst the favorites to win this major.
