Dave Roberts Hired As Dodgers’ Manager

Dave RobertsAbout a month has passed after Don Mattingly left, the Dodgers have found their new leader. A bench coach from the Padres, Dave Roberts, was chosen as the Dodgers’ new manager. As Roberts was appointed Mattingly was recruited a few days ago by the Miami Marlins.

Roberts, played ten seasons in the majors. He played for the Dodgers from 2002 to 2004. He also played for the Cleveland Indians (1999-2001), Boston Red Sox (2004), San Diego Padres (2005 and 2006) and San Francisco Giants (2007 and 2008). The former outfielder will be remembered thanks to his historic 2nd base steal in the fourth game of the ALCS between the Yankees and the Red Sox. In the ninth inning, and Boston down 4-3 to Mariano Rivera, Roberts went jogging emerging at first on Kevin Millar and sneaked to second. Eventually the Red Sox took the World Series, their first in 86 years.

At 43 years old, Roberts would be the youngest foreman in the history of the Dodgers since Walston at 42 years of age went to the Blues in 1954 (the interim manager Glenn Hoffman was 39). Roberts would become the eighth leader of Los Angeles in the last 17 years, after 42 seasons under the Hall of Fame names, Alston and Tommy Lasorda.

He joined the Padres as first base coach in 2011. He met with the Seattle Mariners before the start of autumn, before the job was given to Scott Servais. Roberts must overcome Mattingly’s work, whom by mutual agreement left the team last month after five years. During this period he won three consecutive titles in the National League, but did not reach the World Series.

Roberts, whose father is African American and his mother Japanese, making him the first minority manager in the history of the legendary franchise. The new manager won the the position over former player and current Dodgers’ director of player development, Gabe Kapler. The team will officially present the new helmsman of the three-time champions of the National League West on December 1st, at Dodger Stadium.
