2019 Oakland Athletics Preview

khris davis oakland athleticsThe 2019 Oakland Athletics will feature a team hampered by injuries to their pitching staff as Sean Manaea and Jharel Cotton are not expected to be ready until the second half of the season.

Although a difficult start to the season is to be expected, they could bounce back in the latter half. The A’s will begin the season with Mike Fiers, Marco Estrada, Daniel Mengden and Paul Blackburn in the mound.

The Oakland Athletics are still a team under construction, but their farm system has already shown its potential with players like Matt Olson and Matt Chapman making the jump to the big leagues, and this season the same will happen with prospects like Jesus Luzardo or A.J. Puk.

There are still many questions surrounding this team, but if their injured players come back strong they have the potential to compete at least for a wild card spot this year. In 2018 they left very good impressions and this season if their young players continue to develop and flourish, they could even make a run at the division title against the highly favored Houston Astros.

The A’s strength is their youth as the farm system continues to produce new stars such as Olson and Chapman. They also have enough power at bat, especially with designated hitter Khris Davis, who has homered 133 times in three seasons.

Davis along with Olson and Chapman should help the team end the season with more than 234 dingers.

The main concern for the A’s continues to be the starting rotation as it has several strong prospects, but no proven ace to anchor the unit.

Also, the catcher position is still undecided as Chris Herrman will need arthroscopic surgery on his right knee and is expected to miss significant time. Josh Phegley and Nick Hundley are expected to split time and compete for the job.

Expected Starting Lineup:

C: Josh Phegley, 1B: Matt Olson, 2B: Jurickson Profar, 3B: Matt Chapman, SS: Marcus Semien, LF: Robbie Grossman. CF: Ramon Laureano, RF: Stephen Piscotty, DH: Khris Davis.

Expected Rotation:

Mike Fiers (R), Marco Estrada (R), Daniel Mengden (R) Paul Blackburn (R) Frankie Montas (R)

Expected Bullpen:

Blake Treinen (CL), Lou Trivino, Joakim Soria, Fernando Rodney, Ryan Buchter, Yusmeiro Petit, Andrew Triggs, Jerry Blevins, Liam Hendricks, Ryan Dull, and J.B. Wendelken.
