Houston Texans Drawing Good Money In Vegas Books

Houston TexansBack not long ago it was the Indianapolis Colts, with Peyton Manning at the helm, topping the AFC South with the lowly Houston Texans trying to climb out of the cellar.  The upcoming NFL season is most likely to see the Texans on the rise if the oddsmakers are making the correct calls.

Houston is a strong, tough team in the image of their great defensive end J.J. Watt.  They play rough and tumble football and take on all comers head-on. The only serious competition that the Texans are likely to be facing next season for the AFC South title comes in the form of Andrew Luck and the Colts.  Some handicappers are predicting a ‘sophomore slump’ for Luck in his second full season in the NFL but still others are saying ‘don’t count on it’.

With both the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Tennessee Titians essentially in rebuilding years, neither of these two teams is expected to make much of a run for the divisional title this year. The smart money so far has been going to the Texans who have managed to rack up 22 regular season wins in the past two years.

But bettors aren’t forgetting how easy a victory it was for Tom Brady and the Patriots when they faced those same Texans in the playoffs last year.  The AFC South title is one thing, the playoffs may turn out to be a whole different story.

Major sportsbooks in Las Vegas such as Caesars Entertainment and MGM Resorts are currently listing the Houston Texans as 12-to-1 favorites to win Super Bowl XLVIII while the Colts are way down the ladder at 35 or even 40-to-1.

One of the VP’s at MGM, Jay Rood, recently told reporters that, “sportsbooks are drawing good money on Houston, though there was more interest in the Texans to win the Super Bowl last season”.  Both MGM & Caesars have set the Texans win totals for next season at 10 which seems just about on the money. Give them 10.5 wins and professional players would be all over that proposition to bet the Under.

As it stands this week, the Texans are the -300 favorite to win the AFC South at most books meaning bettors have to lay $3 to win $1 if Houston does indeed win the division.  The Colts are at 2-to-1, the Titans at 9-to-1 and the Jags at 25-to-1.
